Just last February 27, 2017, General Mobile, a Turkey-based smartphone company, unveiled the newest smartphone in their “Android One” line up, known as the “GM 6” or “GM 6 Android One” at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Google launched the Android One program a few years back with the objectives of pushing its Android mobile operating system for the budget phone as an alternative to their Nexus devices. Android One delivers a stock android experience with a promise of updates straight from Google. The GM 6 is General Mobile’s latest budget 4G smartphone in partnership once again with Google, as an Android One phone still remains a popular budget phone in the market today. If we can remember, General Mobile first partnered with Google in 2015 to launch the first Android one smartphone in the European market in May 2015 with their General Mobile 4G model. The 4G model found a success in Turkey, as it became the best-selling smartphone, and was followed by the release of the GM 5.
At your first look at the GM 6 Android One, you might find the design is a mediocre one, as it is built with a metal frame with a 2.5D curved screen with Gorilla glass 4 protection, and the back cover is simply made up of rubbery plastic, living up to the reputation of Android One devices to have an unimpressive or dull design, as the focus is on the software and not on the hardware. The width is at 71.3mm, height at 144mm, with a thickness of 8.6mm that weighs 150 grams (5.29 ounces), 10 grams lighter compared to the GM 5. The GM 6 is designed with 3 physical keys with the power button on the right and the volume rocker on the left side. The device is available in gray, gold and rose-gold colors.
The GM 6 delivers a 5 inches touchscreen IPS display on a 720 by 1280 pixels resolution at 294 pixels per inch. The System on Chip is powered now by a 64 bit MediaTek MT6737T designed with four Cortex A53 CPU cores that is clocked at 1.5 GHz compared to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410 before in the GM 5. The Graphics Processing unit (GPU) is empowered by a dual-core Mali T720 MP2 at 600 MHz with 3 GB of LPDDR3 RAM in 32 GB of internal storage, and can be expanded up to 128 GB through a micro SD card that runs in the newest android operating system, Android 7.0 Nougat. The rear camera is packed with a 13 megapixel CMOS sensor in f/2.0 aperture with dual LED flash, while the front-facing camera is an 8 megapixel shooter with LED flash too. The battery department is made up of a non-removable 3000 mAh Lithium-Polymer battery type that makes the device last for quite some time. GM 6 Android One is a single SIM phone, and the connectivity supports 3G, 5G, FM GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. The sensors on the phone consist of Compass Magnetometer, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor, and Gyroscope, aside from the Fingerprint sensor for the security.
This General Mobile smartphone is available in 45 countries now, compared to 20 countries before, according to Sebahattin Yaman, Chairman of General Mobile, who said:“General Mobile 4G, the first product of our collaboration that we developed within the Android One program, has achieved great success in many countries, and it positioned among the top as one of the most preferred smartphones in the researches. Then, we carried this success to global scale by selling our General Mobile ’GM 5‘ and ’GM 5 Plus,, the second and third models of Android One in 20 countries this year.. With the new ‘GM 6,’ we aim to increase our success by selling General Mobile products in 45 countries.”
In general, this seems to be a satisfactory smartphone. With the not so up-to-date SoC, this device may be a bit slow, but the main selling point of this device is the Android One experience that will readily give you an out of the box experience with 32GB internal storage, 3 GB of RAM, and a 720p display plus the front LED flash for the selfie in an affordable pricing.
