Lenovo Vibe K5 Review

Can you feel the good vibes in the air?

Hello everyone, today we are reviewing the smartphone from Lenovo, which was recently demonstrated couple of months ago. You are probably familiar with the company, as they also make globally known line-up of professional business laptops IdeaPad & ThinkPad. Yes, the ones that serious guys in expensive suits love to use. Yes, the ones that still has the trackball on the keyboard and design that is stuck in mid 90’s.

Introduced during Mobile World Congress 2016, Lenovo Vibe K5 (and it’s big brother K5 Plus) brought pretty interesting features not only to it’s own line-up, but also to the whole market of mid-budget devices. Particularly, this phone grabs attention by the materials of the housing. Not everyday we can see the phones with aluminium back plate in this pricing category. So if you hide the brand and model number, and stop looking the specs, this phone will leave an impression of sub-flagship device with higher price tag. Even the side plastic bars are harmonized to the overall design.

Plus the display size of 5 inches is a good choice in terms of usability and comfortable usage with one hand. Although you can find numerous cases and covers for this phone, we believe that guys at Lenovo made a terrific job, as you will probably want to leave the phone “naked” just for the beautiful curves and stylish back panel. Now let’s have a closer look at the specs and see the hardware that’s powering our newcomer.

Lenovo Vibe K5

The model number for this phone is A6020a40. Don’t mistake with K5 Plus.

Lenovo Vibe K5 Specifications:

CPU:  8 core Qualcomm Snapdragon 415 MSM 8929

Lucky to see this family of processors within this phone, which by the way, has MSRP of just $ 129. This CPU demonstrates very good performance, also being energy efficient. Which means that you can drift and boost in Asphalt 8 without any lags, even having some apps running in background at the same time. Graphical & visual processing part is secured with new Adreno 405 chip. Throw any game, this thing will hande.

RAM: 2Gb. Generous 2Gb. This amount takes us to the whole new level from 1 or 1.5 Gb models. Now you can cache more apps without hogging the system. Even RAM hungry apps like Chrome or Skype will “fly” with smooth interface.

ROM: Internal storage here is 16Gb, but only 11Gb is available to user. As we always suggest, try to delete some pre-installed apps that you don’t need to make up more space for your own data. MicroSD slot is here to save to store all your music collection. We will return to music review later. This is separate story in this phone.

Battery: 2750 mAh, which is not that bad actually considering the slim form factor. 1 day of comfortable usage without compromising connectivity, GPS and social features. In “just calling” scenario, the phone can hold up 2 days!

Camera: 13 Megapixel camera with the ability to shoot in HDR mode for the artistic ones. Focus on tap also available. However, due to lack of software optimization, sometimes the photos can came out a bit blurry or out of focus. This problem shuld be solved in future firmware or Camera uprates. You can always use image enhancer apps from Google Play to fine tune and add the finishing touch.

Display: 5 inch display with HD resolution 1280x720. Even if thought that this screen is not Full HD, be aware that here Lenovo put high quality IPS panel. That means even in HD resolution you still can crystal crisp icons, images, great viewing angles form all sides, high brightness resource to read books on sun and nice blacks. We are actually surprised to see such a great display in this price segment phone. This is definitely could be a game changer and put a final decision to grab this phone.

Connectivity: 2 SIM card slots, 2G / 3G / 4G. Bluetooth 4.1. Besides GPS, Vibe K5 also features Russian developed GLONASS navigation system, which makes position locking even more fast and accurate. Micro USB supports OTG protocol. You can connect flash, hard drives and transfer files on the go. Need separate OTG cable!

Sound. Here is the sweet spot. You won’t find an ordinary pack of mid level speakers. This is Vibe! Vibe everywhere. Lenovo packed Dolby Atmos technology in this bad guy to give you maximum sound quality. Sound processing is flawless here. Connect high quality headphones and be sure that even those snob audiophiles with vinyl decks will envy you.

Lenovo Vibe K5 Conclusion

Lenovo Vibe K5 is definitely a game changer in sub $ 150 price category. Packed with performance CPU, 4G / LTE connectivity, Dolby Atmos sound system this is a “bang for a buck” choice to experience full Android potential.
