Recent news reports that Apple is trying to explore and employ the under-display fingerprint scanning technology into its phones. However, the famous chip maker company Qualcomm has outrun the iPhone foundation company in applying the technology. Qualcomm has announced its ultrasonic fingerprint reader and applied it to Vivo Xplay 6 phone at MWC Shanghai (demo purpose only). In this article, we will talk about the

Just like a coin, everything in this world might have two different sides would it be advantages and disadvantages or good and bad. Let’s talk about the first subheading about Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint reader.
Qualcomm’s latest tech up and down performance (Vivo Xplay 6)
The newest highlight about fingerprint scanner is its location that was put underneath the display screen, removing the physical fingerprint sensor. Before this technology came out, the fingerprint reader is located just above the Home button screen.
Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is placed underneath the Vivo Xplay 6’s OLED display panel (up to 1.2mm-thick). The tech still works very fine even when the Smartphone is immersed in the water.
There’s also a demo when the sensor is placed on the back of Vivo Xplay 6 metallic body, thus allowing the phone to be unlocked even when placed underwater. This unlock method will enable you to take an underwater pictures or videos while in shallow water.
Furthermore, this technology can tolerate dirt and sweat on your skin better than its previous version. Another good point for this tech is the fact that it can work underneath metal or aluminum (up to 650um) and glass (up to 800um).
Let’s talk about the down side of this tech now. When a customer tried this tech at Vivo’s booth at MWC, Shanghai, he realizes that Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner will only detect the finger that he registered. For example, the customer registered his thumb for the fingerprint reader test and when he used his thumb, everything works perfectly. However, when he tries other fingers, the phone failed to unlock the device.
In addition, the fingerprint recognition speed is considerably slower than the instantaneous unlock of recent Smartphones, about one second between the first touch and entering home screen. The recognition area is also small, but Vivo’s company claims that it’s only for the demo and they will widen the sensing area on the bottom half of the screen when they ready to launch the phone to the public.
Release date timeline of Vivo Xplay 6
For the release date timeline, the Vivo president can’t give the accurate timeframe on when they will launch this tech on their devices. The chip maker company, however, hints that Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner for glass and metal can be employed into gadgets powered by Snapdragon 660 and 630 and this tech will start shipping to OEMs starting this month.
For the more advanced of Qualcomm’s under-display fingerprint sensor, it will work with future Snapdragon platforms as well as non-snapdragon platforms. Qualcomm states that Smartphones bearing that tech will go commercial sampling in Q4 2017.
